Well I don’t think anybody expected that! You couldn’t have asked for two more contrasting results in the semi-finals of the BDO Lakeside World Championships.
Our Scott destroyed Jeff Smith 6-0 on his way to the final in the afternoon, and then Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams played out a thrilling 6-5 win over a devastated Glen Durrant in the evening.
Scotty Dog v The Silencer
Just 24 legs were needed in this match as Scott silenced ‘The Silencer’ Jeff Smith. Smith never got going and Scott wasn’t in the mood to give him a chance and breezed through to today’s final.
Having never previously been past the second round (in five attempts) at the Lakeside, Scott is now into the final, guaranteed at least £35,000, will probably be offered a place in a reality TV show and hoping to buy a new tractor for the farm (apparently).
No Seeded Players
There’s really not much to say about this semi-final – it was very one-sided. Lots of people are making a big deal out of the fact that Scott hasn’t played any seeded players on his way to the final, but I don’t think that matters. Scott has played so well, that he would have given anybody a decent game this week, and I’m confident that we will see that this evening against Wolfie.
Tomorrow morning, we could be waking up to a Dorset BDO World Darts Champion – how amazing would that be?!
Wolfie v Duzza
As one sided as the Mitchell v Smith semi was, the evening semi-final was just out of this world! The Commentators on the BT Sport were describing it as the greatest match in the 30 year history of the Lakeside World Championship!
“Well I hate to admit it but that was a bloody brilliant game of darts. Good luck for tomorrow Scott Mitchell. I might even have to watch!”
Julie Allen (my wife), as a non-dart fan on Facebook
It had everything, including (almost) a nine-dart leg, when Adams missed the double-twelve by a gnats whisker to take the £52,000 reward. Amazingly, he didn’t hit the double, then went on to lose the leg and set! That was the seventh set – Durrant won it and took a 4-3 lead in the match, going ahead in sets for the first time.
As the match approached a conclusion both players kept up an incredible standard of darts that had everyone engrossed who was watching – for the neutral it was captivating, but for friends and family it must have been agonizing. In the post-match interview, Durrant was clearly devastated, hardly able to look at the camera and failing to finish more than one sentence as he held back his emotions.
Wolfie was understandably elated in his post-match interview and will now face Our Scott in today’s final – Wolfie and Scotty Dog are ranked one and two in the world by the BDO and based on this weeks performances the final promises to be a cracker – do not miss it!
Tonight’s final is scheduled for 5:45pm.
